Working smoke detectors save Spokane Valley man's life

Spokane Valley Fire Department responded to an early morning house fire at 4308 E 2nd Avenue in Spokane Valley. Firefighters arrived at small, single-family home, just after midnight to find a man had safely made it outside and smoke coming from the front of his home. Crews quickly extinguished a small fire in the attic over the living room.

Woman burned in Tacoma house fire

One person was hurt in a house fire in Tacoma. The fire broke out at the home in the 5700 block of Park Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. A woman who lives in the home was seriously burned and was transported to a Seattle hospital. Firefighters knocked down the flames after about an hour and were able to keep the fire contained to the first story of the home.

North County RFA Chief: Community paramedics aim to improve response times

Community paramedics are the way of the future, according to Chief John Cermak of North County Regional Fire Authority. “It’s proactive medicine, as opposed to reactive,” Cermak said. “A community paramedic can prevent 911 calls.” Indeed, he is working with a group to get a CP for North County, as part of a grant request developed by the North County Accountable Community of Health (NCACH) that serves Skagit, Whatcom, San Juan, Island and Snohomish counties.
