The Position

The Fire Chief directs the overall operations in an all-hazard organization delivering essential emergency and non-emergency services to the community and greater area to include fire suppression, fire education and prevention, special operations, and EMS services.  The Chief is tasked with establishing high levels of trust and credibility through a style of collaboration and teamwork while reflecting decisive leadership when required.

Serving as a member of the City’s senior management team, collaborates with the Mayor and other City departments on strategy and policy. Work involves significant community engagement and public involvement with the Mayor, elected officials, other policy makers and citizens. 

The ideal candidate will bring demonstrated organizational development and interpersonal relationship skills necessary to support a fire department and build collaborative, strategic partnerships with staff and the community.

Knowledge

regulations governing firefighting functions and emergency medical services.

management, and ALS.

« Principles and practices of general business
management, including fiscal and budget
management.

« Experience working with combination career and volunteer departments is preferred

« Knowledge of and experience with the collective bargaining process, labor negotiations, and civil service rules.

Training & Experience

« BS from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Fire Science, public administration, or a closely related field.


« Eight years of progressively responsible fire and EMS services including suppression, prevention, training, emergency management, and advanced life support. 


« Completion of a National Fire Academy Executive Officer program is highly desirable.


« Budget preparation and labor relations experience preferred.




Compensation

Salary Range: $105,000-$120,000. Employees typically begin at the lower end of the range.

Retirement: Chief is a member of the WA State Law Enforcement Officers' and Fire Fighters' Retirement System (LEOFF).  Employees have the option of contributing to deferred compensation plans.

Medical Benefits: The City offers comprehensive medical, dental and vision benefits for the employee and dependents. The City benefit package also includes short term and long term disability packages, an Employee Assistance Program, Section 125 Flexible Spending Plans, and discounts to local gyms.

Employees accrue 12 days of sick leave each year.

Vacation and Holidays: Employees accrue 12 vacation days per year.  Accrual increases with years of service. The City also provides 13 paid holidays per year.

Duty Vehicle: Provided to maintain a state of readiness to enable Chief to provide emergency responses 24/7.  While on stand-by/duty status vehicle may be used for incidental personal trips and business.   

Life Insurance: $10,000

Notification, Selection, & Interview

Candidates submitting a complete application package will be notified regarding their status in the recruitment process. If the selected candidate lives a considerable distance from Washington, the City may consider providing relocation assistance.  Candidates selected to be interviewed will be contacted by August 16, 2018. 

 

Appointment 

Interviews are scheduled to occur on Thursday
August 23, 2018.  Finalists may be asked to attend a second interview on Friday August 24, 2018.
