Public safety officers’ tax savings on health insurance premiums

If you’re a retired public safety officer, the federal Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA) permits you to exclude up to $3,000 of your qualified health, accident and long-term care insurance premiums from your gross taxable income each year, as long as the premiums are deducted from your retirement benefit.

Reimbursements for Providing Fire Services to Your Schools

Based on information provided by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), the biennial Washington State Budget includes an amount for OSPI to cover Fire Services provided to schools. In July of each year, OSPI calculates a per student rate for fire services. 

To calculate this, OSPI takes the annual School Fire Services budget and divides it by the number of preschool through grade 12 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) students reported to them. The resulting per student rate is then multiplied by the number of students each school certified to OSPI to determine the school’s annual Fire Services revenue.

It is with great sorrow that we must report the off duty death of Captain Tim McCoy, on Saturday, October 22, 2016.

East Pierce Fire & Rescue and IAFF Local 3520, East Pierce Professional Firefighters

Captain McCoy was enjoying one of his favorite activities, riding a dirt bike on his property just outside of Bonney Lake when he experienced a serious accident.  EPFR crews responded to the scene and transported their brother to the trauma center in Tacoma. Unfortunately, Tim succumbed to his injuries a few hours later in the presence of his family, friends and fire department family.

Body Of Firefighter Ken Ward Found In Grant County

Near George, Wash. (23OCT2016) – The body of Mountain View Fire & Rescue Firefighter, Ken Ward has been found near the Wildhorse Monument near George, Washington.

An off duty police officer spotted Firefighter Ward and his truck around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
