Female firefighter in Georgia leads entire engine company for 24-hour shift

Who was it that said “Girls just wanna have fun?” Albany Fire Department Apparatus Engineer Operator/Driver Christy Bengis, an 18-year AFD veteran who is one of two females to serve in that capacity, put that notion to rest when she became the first female firefighter in the department to lead an entire engine company for a 24-hour shift Wednesday.

World-class Training: Annual TEEX program draws 700-plus for industrial firefighting drills in Texas

The Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service is hosting more than 700 firefighters from across the nation and more than a dozen other countries as part of its 57th annual Industrial Fire School this week. Each summer, TEEX hosts three weeklong fire training courses that attract thousands from all over the world to Bryan-College Station.

Memories of spectacular fire at Old Orchard Beach pier in Maine still vivid, even after 50 years

The town’s beachfront was teeming with tens of thousands of tourists on the evening of July 19, 1969. The popular carousel with hand-carved horses spun its riders round and round. The brightly colored Noah’s Ark fun house, a fixture near the iconic wooden pier since 1929, rocked back and forth. Pairs of thrill seekers slid down the massive Jack and Jill slide, shrieking as they dropped 50 feet from the top.

200th New York firefighter dies due to 9/11 illness

Illnesses related to the 9/11 attacks claimed their 200th New York firefighter this week. Firefighters Kevin Nolan and Richard Driscoll died on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) confirmed to The Hill on Thursday. “It is almost incomprehensible that, after losing 343 members on September 11, we have now had 200 more FDNY members die from World Trade Center illnesses," Fire Commissioner Daniel A.

Man hospitalized with severe burn injuries after fire at Washougal home

A man suffered severe burns in a fire that ignited at a home in Washougal and was rescued by his neighbor early Friday morning. Firefighters responded to the residence in the 2100 block of 37th Street at 4:17 a.m. and found the fire was fully involved. The Camas-Washougal Fire Department said one burn victim was reported in the fire.
