Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) serves the Cities of Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake, Millwood, and parts of unincorporated Spokane County, including the communities of Otis Orchards, Pasadena Park, and the area surrounding Liberty Lake. SVFD provides the following services: Fire Suppression; Advanced Life Support Emergency Medical Services; Technical Rescue; Fire Investigations; Fire Prevention; Community Risk Reduction; Commercial Property Inspections; and CPR and Fire Safety Training. The department responded to 22,443 calls for service in 2021 with 82 percent of those being emergency medical service calls.

The department’s service area covers 75 square miles and has a combined population of over 136,000. Within the response area there are:
• 43,000 homes
• 1 major hospital
• 4,500 businesses
• 20 nursing homes
• 53 schools
• Union Pacific-Burlington-Santa Fe Railroad
• Interstate 90
• Approximately 13 miles of the Spokane River

The department has a 2022 budget of $56.5 million with 10 stations, a Training Center with a burn tower, and a Maintenance facility. The Administration Building houses the Prevention Division, Information Technology Division, Chiefs’ offices, and support staff. SVFD employs 204 personnel composed of 178 uniformed personnel and 26 civilian employees.

The salary for the incoming Mechanic is $31.47 hourly. SVFD also offers an attractive benefits package including: Retirement – Washington State Department of Retirement Systems PERS

The Mechanic performs repair and fleet operations work for all the Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) automotive fleet including fire apparatus, staff vehicles, trailers, firefighting equipment, SCBA compressors and storage systems, standby power generators, and snow removal equipment, as assigned. In the absence of the Fleet Operations Supervisor, the Lead Mechanic will assume the responsibility for ensuring that all mechanical repairs and fleet operations are completed. In addition to your routine duties, you will be required to participate in on call rotation and respond after hours. This may require responding to fire alarms and other emergencies.
• Must have proof of eligibility for employment in the United States.
• Must be 18 years of age prior to the closing of application
• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
• Must have a valid state driver’s license
• Must obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s license within one year
• Must be able to communicate the English language clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
• Must be a non-user of any tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes
• Must possess good mechanical skills
• Must possess adequate knowledge of the operation of equipment, tools, and vehicles used within SVFD
• Must successfully pass the SVFD medical and drug screening testing
• Must possess and provide mechanical tools necessary to accomplish basic repairs
• Must be physically capable of lifting heavy objects as necessary.
• Must have experience with heavy equipment
• Must have a minimum of three (3) years' experience as a mechanic with emphasis in the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of diesel and gasoline engines, heavy trucks, and fire apparatus while working in private or public repair facility
• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) required
• Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) desired.
• Must obtain a Master EVT Certification within 2 years. Certification must remain current as a condition of employment
• Copy of Commercial Driver’s License, if available
