Lateral Firefighter EMT or Paramedic
Firefighters perform work tasks under emergency and non-emergency conditions. The position of Firefighter is a physically demanding position and requires personnel to be in good physical condition. Firefighters provide emergency medical services and pre-hospital care by performing physician directed and pre-authorized treatment to patients requiring pre-hospital and ambulance service. Additionally, Firefighters protect life and property by performing fire suppression duties, emergency aid, rescue, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties.
 
The job of firefighter is performed at all hours of the day or night, on weekdays, weekends, and holidays and in all weather conditions. Routine use of specialized personal protective equipment is required, including but not limited to: Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, structural fire protective ensemble, wildland fire protective ensemble, hazardous materials protective ensemble, and universal precautions ensemble for EMS work.
 
Work can include operating in immediately dangerous to life and health environments, requiring use of industry standard passport accountability and personal protective equipment while working within a team.
 
Firefighters must respond to calls in a timely manner and meet turn out time goals established by the department. Emergency response is a team effort, and firefighters need to be able to communicate with each other, patients, and the public effectively. Firefighters must excel at both conveying ideas and listening to instructions.
 
The normal work schedule is a rotating schedule of 48 hours on duty with 96 hours off duty, reduced by one day in every 24-day cycle (Kelly Day), and is based on a 2,555-hour work year. This is a 365 day per year, 7 day a week, 24 hour a day position. The exact schedules are assigned by management. The City of Moses Lake requires punctual attendance, working on-site as necessitated by job elements, working a full-time schedule, working overtime as necessary, and working effectively and productively with others. Unexcused or unauthorized full or partial absences during any scheduled shift, arriving late, or leaving early for any reason, including patterns of utilization of sick leave in conjunction with Kelly time, may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. Time off may be approved if allowed by applicable policies covering illness, injury, or other personal emergency, or other personal time-off.
