Deputy Chief, Operations
Lacey Fire District 3
With a call volume of over 17,000 per year, Lacey Fire District 3 (LFD3) provides fire protection and emergency services from five neighborhood stations strategically located throughout a 70-mile area, which includes the City of Lacey, the surrounding unincorporated communities, and the Nisqually Tribal Reservation with a population over 106,000 residents. The service area is a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial use with some agricultural and undeveloped wildland.
A 3-member executive team, including the Fire Chief and two Deputy Chiefs, lead an innovative team of five Assistant Chiefs, three Division Directors, 15 administrative professionals, and more than 120 full time career emergency responders.

The Position
The Deputy Chief of Operations will function as a member of the Executive Leadership Team and assume responsibility for day-to-day operations functions. Under the direction of the Fire Chief, this position supervises, plans, coordinates, directs the emergency operations providing exceptional leadership and support while exemplifying The LFD3 Way.

The Ideal Candidate
In addition to being well qualified, the Deputy Chief of Operations must possess certain essential qualities to be successful in this role to include being ethical, flexible, adaptable, and relationship centric. The ideal candidate should excel at organizational planning, oral and written communication, problem solving and decision making. In addition, the ideal candidate must exhibit strong interest in using technology and be collaborative, decisive, and a strong leader of people. The Deputy Chief of Operations must be skilled in directing personnel in the Incident Command System, be able to maintain focus and composure under varying levels of stress and deadlines, and meet District standards for customer service and teamwork. The candidate must also be knowledgeable of current methods and standards of contemporary fire service and emergency response as well as pertinent laws and standards.

Compensation & Benefits
The successful candidate will be offered:
  • The current salary ranges from $13,388.83 to $16,736 per month DOE
  • District vehicle (requires residency within 30 miles of the District)

Requirements Education and Experience
  • Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree desired.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of documented successful experience as a company officer or above with additional management experience and oversight responsibilities.
  • Extensive and recent experience in fire service emergency incident management.
  • Demonstrated ability in personnel supervision, scheduling, budgeting, planning, organizing and facilitating meetings.

Additional Requirements:
Must possess or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire any U.S. state or District of Columbia driver’s license, and maintain such license for the duration of employment. Must maintain an Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention (EVIP) certification or Commercial Driver License (CDL). Ability to maintain focus and composure under varying levels of stress and deadlines.  Must meet District standards for customer service and teamwork.  Facilitates meetings and work groups.
