POSITION: Public Educator
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
BARGAINING UNIT: Local 3390 Bargaining Unit (Uniformed/Non-Uniformed)
REPORTS TO: Division Chief of Prevention
PAY RANGE: $6,886.32 - $9,837.61 (DOQ)

This position is responsible for delivering fire prevention and safety education through outreach programs, presentations, activities, classes, and special events to a variety of public and private groups including local schools, businesses, and community organizations. Key areas include emergency preparedness, CPR training, car
seat installations, community risk reduction, wildfire prevention and safe sitter courses. The role requires creativity, independent judgment and flexibility in achieving educational goals and District objectives. The Public Educator position requires a flexible schedule to accommodate the demands of the role.

• Provide educational training classes, programs, and presentations at local schools, community groups, and for the public as needed, directed or requested.
• Develop, create, prepare and update lesson plans, presentations and materials, including print, digital, photo, and video content, for public education programs, activities, events, and classes, ensuring messaging and content is current and consistent and meets District standards.
• Positively interact with all age groups and tailor presentations and delivery styles, as needed, to suit the audience.
• Prepare annual goals and objectives for the position and collaborate with Prevention team on current and ongoing projects and education program ideas or presentations and provide support and assistance within the department as needed or requested.
• Prioritizes and organizes requests for Public Education program presentations and identifies training methods, materials and presentation requirements.
• Identifies and coordinates District-wide resources for public education programs and presentations.
• Deliver excellent customer service and professionalism in the community, model teamwork, flexibility and adaptability and provide education presentations professionally and with an upbeat, positive demeanor.
• Coordinates community public events such as Maritime parade, Harvest Festival, and other outreach initiatives.
• Order necessary products, supplies and materials as needed and track budget expenditures.
• Compile information and prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports related to education activities, special projects, and statistics, as required for education program evaluation and to track and assess community education needs, program effectiveness and outcomes.
• Attend relevant and appropriate conferences and trainings and participate in education groups.
• Develop and foster connections, externally and internally, and with other fire agencies, to expand and enhance outreach and engagement.
• Assist with grants and with gathering information for specific projects and planning as needed or directed.
• Serve as an alternate Public Information Officer (PIO) as needed or assigned.
• Collaborate and communicate positively and effectively with employees, community members, vendors, other fire agencies and the school district administrative team and teachers.
• Attend administrative and other meetings and participate on committees as assigned.
• Works independently and meets established expectations and deadlines.
• Travel to various worksites, using either personal or District vehicle, to support the needs of the District.
• Must complete required certifications and trainings for the position within 1 year of hire date.
• Individuals with Firefighter 1, EMT or Paramedic certifications may be expected to respond to emergency incidents, provide medical aid and perform BLS/ALS treatment, as needed.
• Responsible for actions, words, and attitudes while demonstrating cooperation, courtesy, and consideration to foster a respectful and productive team environment. Ensures all behaviors align with organizational values.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary for the position.

Required:
1. Bachelor’s degree in education, communications, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides for the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
2. Two years of experience successfully delivering education and/or training to a wide variety of ages and groups within the community.
3. Obtain and maintain applicable certifications as needed or requested to perform job duties, such as CPR/AED/BLS, Public Safety Educator, Car Seat Inspection, and Safe Sitter instructor.
4. Valid Washington State Driver License and clean driving record.
