Chief Aaron Markham has lived and worked in Sunnyside for over twenty-five years. He was hired by the Sunnyside Fire Department in 1991 as a Firefighter/ EMT- IV/Airway tech. He has promoted through the ranks of the organization to his current position as Fire chief. Aaron worked as a firefighter for ten years before being promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal in 2001. He served as the Fire Marshal for three years before being promoted to interim fire chief in September 2004 and later appointed as the fire chief January 1, 2005. 
Over his fire service career, Aaron has continually worked on his education by attending local colleges, Yakima Valley Community College and Columbia Basin Community College, taking a course in fire science. He later transferred to Eastern Oregon University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree, with honors, in Fire Service Administration. Aaron has attended the National Fire Academy’s four-year executive fire officer program in Emmitsburg, Maryland and received his certificate in June of 2017. 

Aaron is very active in his county and serves as the current President of the Yakima County Fire Chief’s Association and Chair of the Yakima County EMS Trauma Care Council. He is also a member of the 911 Operations Board and EMS Administration Board. 
Aaron is the recipient of the Yakima County Department of EMS Administrator of the Year in 2011 and the Spirit of Sunnyside, Public Employee/Official of the Year in 2014.

Aaron lives on a small seven-acre farm just outside of Sunnyside, in a house he helped build with his wife Annie and two kids Tanner and Hanna. He and his family enjoy fishing, boating, camping, and many other outdoor activities.
